What should I expect as a beginner in class? New students can expect increased body awareness, greater cardiovascular health and muscle strength, and a higher energy level. Many students have said that capoeira has helped to increase their confidence, mood, and has caused them to seek out healthier lifestyle choices outside of class as well. These benefits come both from the art of capoeira and also from being part of a supportive and positive community of other capoeira practitioners.
A beginner in class should expect to participate in physical conditioning. Students of all different physical forms join capoeira, and each student is encouraged to work at the best of his/her ability at the time. Taking water is encouraged as needed, and while there is a drinking fountain on site, many students choose to keep a water bottle near by in the training space. New students will also spend time focusing on proper technique and on the fundamental movements of capoeira, which are like the building blocks of playing capoeira (see the Beginner’s Curriculum sheet). After about a month of training, students are ready to join in during the “roda” at the end of class. A capoeira roda is a circle that students stand in, and clap and sing along to the music that is being played and sung by those playing instruments. Students “buy in” or go into the roda to play capoeira with another student. At this point, it is recognized that a new student is able to more fully participate in capoeira, and it is expected that this student would follow our school’s dress code of a group t-shirt, the group capoeira pants, and would also be able to wear the first cord or belt- a corda cruda, or raw cord. |
How often should I train?
